The Barbie doll was invented by Ruth Handler in the 1950’s. She named the doll after her daughter, Barbara. When Ruth Handler saw that her daughter liked playing with an adult looking dolls rather than baby dolls, she then came up with the Idea of Barbie. Barbie was first introduced at a Toy Fair by the Mattel toy company. March 9, 1959 is now Barbie birthday because this was the day of the Toy Fair and the beginning of the Barbie Doll. Barbie was one of the first dolls that was an adult, not a baby doll.
Barbie also has a large variety of fashions and one of the largest wardrobes in the world. Barbie's original fashion model outfits were designed by fashion designer Charlotte Johnson. Over the years the Barbie doll has become one of the world’s most popular toys. Browse through the list below and see if you can find that Barbie doll you played with as a child.
